Presenting: This paper examines the evolution of policing tactics and strategies intended to enhance the UK police’s capacity both to contain weapon proliferation and the trafficking of illicit firearms and to prevent their criminal misuse. The chapter begins by outlining the tactical and developmental strategies employed by UK law enforcement to keep ahead of organised crime groups (OCG)s and other users of illicit firearms, and addresses the question of whether UK law enforcement has the capability, tools, intelligence and international cooperation to stay ahead of criminal use of firearms and the pursuit of terrorists. A central focus is upon the research and development regarding operational tactics, weapons, accessories, ammunition types, intelligence, and other equipment, while evaluating the effectiveness of the strategies used in overt and covert law enforcement supported by specialist firearms operations. The authors also consider the interoperability between UK Law enforcement and UK military around counter terrorism.
