Bullying Research Network International Study: Teachers' Perceptions of Bias-based Bullying Behaviours

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsSymposiumResearch

Description

The papers in this symposium will present findings from four of the countries participating in an ongoing international project, organized by the Bullying Research Network (BRNET), an international group of researchers interested in various aspects of bullying. The current project examines teachers’ willingness to intervene and their likely responses to bias-based bullying and investigates whether those responses and willingness vary across different types of identity-based peer exclusion. Of further interest is whether teacher responses differ as a function of teacher characteristics (e.g., self-efficacy, empathy, etc.) and perceptions of the situation (e.g., victim blaming, perceived responsibility, etc.) as well as school context (e.g., elementary/secondary, rural/urban, homogeneity of student body, etc.). Previous research has demonstrated that teachers with high self-efficacy reported intervening more often in bullying situations (Fischer & Bilz, 2019). Other studies have shown that teacher variables such as gender or years of teaching impact the teacher's response to the bullying situation, like whether to intervene or ignore the situation (Yoon et al., 2011). However, research on an international level as well as research including cultural measures is limited. This symposium will present papers from four different countries (UK, US, Sweden, and Australia) whose data will be collected and analyzed in time for the WABF meeting. Professor Sue Swearer and Professor Wendy Craig will introduce the symposium as co-directors of BRNET, who are leading the international study.
