Description

On Tuesday 1 July they hosted an array of thought-provoking speakers at UON’s Waterside Campus for a day which culminated in a special screening of Nathan Dodzo’s acclaimed film, ‘Breaking Barriers: Racism in Higher Education. The conference is organised by the co-leaders for CARE, Dr Patrice Seuwou and Dr Emel Thomas. Highlights of the day included Professor Sheine Peart from Bishop Grossteste University and Dr Richard Race from Teeside University who presented the justification and methodology for their ongoing research into ‘Toxicity and Black Female Academics in Higher Education.’ The conference also witnessed an emotional talk by Dr Manny Barot entitled ‘From History to Hope – and the Work Still Ahead.’ With a career spanning government, policing, and Holocaust education (including as a former Director at the National Holocaust Centre), Dr Barot offered powerful insights drawn from both professional experience and personal journey. He shared deeply moving stories — from working with individuals in the criminal justice system to growing up in the UK during the 1970s, navigating racism, identity, and belonging in a very different Britain.
