Description
D. Scott Rogo (1950 – 1990) was an outspoken, self-educated, parapsychologist. A profession which explores reports of exceptional human experiences and/or abilities (e.g. telepathy, psychokinesis, and experiences suggestive of life after death, etc.). Although his status within the field was unconventional and not appreciated by some (i.e. no university training, degrees and doctoral thesis) he was a walking encyclopaedia for a variety of paranormal phenomena, and widely respected as such an authority. So much so, Rogo was a guest lecturer on some parapsychology programmes, including the Master’s degree in parapsychology at J. F. Kennedy University in the 1980s. In his lifetime, he had written some 30 books and over 300 articles and book reviews, with his most famous book being Phone Calls from the Dead (1979), co-authored with Raymond Bayless. His life was tragically cut short in August, 1990, when he was murdered in his own home, in Northridge, California. His murder has only recently been solved through cold-case investigation. It is relatively unknown that Rogo’s very early writings – completed between the ages of 16-21 – were on the topic of vampires. For Fate magazine (est. 1948) he had written on the Croglin Grange vampire, in-depth analyses of the vampire legend, and ‘how to kill’ a vampire. He also contributed the foreword to Donald Glut’s True Vampires of History (1971). This presentation shall go into some of those writings and Rogo’s views as an emerging prolific parapsychologist.
