Exploration of the Relationship Between Neurotoxin Facial Aesthetic Treatment and Mood in Perimenopausal Women: an Integrative Review

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference Presentation

Description

There is growing interest and understanding of the menopause and the menopausal transition in women. However, there is much to be investigated regarding mood dysregulation during this period. Menopause transition begins during the early 40's for many women, which correlates with the largest age cohort of women seeking botulinum toxin (BoNTA) treatments. This integrative literature review aims to explore the hypothesis that there is an unintended consequence of improved mood for perimenopausal women following treatment with BoNTA. A systematic strategy was designed to identify studies related to the use of BoNTA for treating mood disorders in perimenopausal and menopausal women, using well defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 32 studies were included in the original review, with 11 being discussed at AMWC. The results demonstrate considerable disparities in the sample sizes, definition of age ranges and follow-up periods. In addition, a variety of doses and sites of administration has been used across different studies, making it difficult to compare or draw consistent conclusions. Anti-depressants and hormone replacement remain the mainstay of the treatment of depression in menopausal women. On the other hand, the facial administration of BoNTA has a well-established safety profile and lacks serious or systemic side effects. Whilst the use of daily medications over long periods of time can be a burden for some patients, BoNTA facial injections undertaken every 12-16 weeks can potentially increase compliance to the treatment of depressive symptoms in perimenopausal and menopausal women. Nevertheless, considering the weaknesses and limitations of the available studies, we find strictly necessary the completion of further prospective clinical trials with larger samples and more objective assessment tools to confirm or refute the alluded benefits and to establish recommendations and application protocols.
