Friendships between children in primary schools: reciprocity, quality and bullying roles

This talk will examine the purpose and importance of children's friendships with peers for their school experience, and the contribution of reciprocity and friendship quality.
The intersection of friendship with bullying will also be discussed - presenting research findings showing how children's existing interpersonal connections shape their role in aggression within the peer group
Through this it will be argued that nurturing good quality reciprocal friendships between children is a valuable anti-bullying strategy. In addition, some research-informed resources will be presented which were developed to support primary educators in building children's friendship skills as part of effective relationships education.
