HEBC Research Group Wellbeing Talk Series

Organisers/ Chair: Kimberley M. Hill and Josephine Chen-Wilson
Speaker: Danielle Paddock

Adolescents’ interactions with peers play an important role in the development of personal attitudes, norms and beliefs surrounding appearance and contribute to their developing body image concerns.
Appearance-related interactions are abundant on social media due to the highly visual appearance-focused nature of platforms (e.g., Instagram), but research in this area is limited. Much of our current understanding of appearance interactions and social media is based on quantitative research that has failed to consider the complexities of the social media environment and how certain design features may impact upon adolescents’ experiences.
Therefore, this presentation will describe a body of work that systematically explores social media and appearance interactions using qualitative (i.e.,
focus group and interviews) and quantitative (i.e., content analysis)methodology to understand how peers interact on social media, and how these online appearance interactions may perpetuate and contribute to body and appearance concerns among adolescents
