Description
The Volta River Authority is the largest energy producer in West Africa and a dominant player in the electricity market in Africa generally. It is a state-owned enterprise which operates a number of power generating facilities through which it generates electricity to power the economies of four countries in the West African sub-region; Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast. One of its facilities, the Akosombo Dam, is amongst the largest rock-filled dams in the world and harnesses lake Volta; the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area. The Volta River Authority has an ambition to become the most sustainable energy produce in all of Africa. To help realise this ambition, the Authority recently entered into an MOU with the Centre for Sustainable Business Practices. The purpose of this MOU was for the agreement of a collaborative framework under which CSBP can support the sustainability ambitions of the Authority through research and knowledge exchange support.
Recently, a team of CSBP researchers were invited to visit VRA in Ghana and run a series of knowledge exchange sessions and workshops. One of the sessions was delivered to demonstrate how VRA can harness the power of innovation to accelerate the impact of its sustainability practices. The knowledge shared in this session was drawn from the work the CSBP team has been doing on the 2024 UON Sustainability Summit to embed and harness innovation within the Summit and Northampton Sustainability Accord frameworks.
