Knowledge Exchange Delivery to the Volta River Authority On Effective Plastic Waste Management Practices

The Volta River Authority is the largest energy producer in West Africa and a dominant player in the electricity market in Africa generally. It is a state-owned enterprise which operates a number of power generating facilities through which it generates electricity to power the economies of four countries in the West African sub-region; Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast. One of its facilities, the Akosombo Dam, is amongst the largest rock-filled dams in the world and harnesses lake Volta; the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area.

The Volta River Authority has an ambition to become the most sustainable energy produce in all of Africa. To help realise this ambition, the Authority recently entered into an MOU with the Centre for Sustainable Business Practices. The purpose of this MOU was for the agreement of a collaborative framework under which CSBP can support the sustainability ambitions of the Authority through research and knowledge exchange support.

Recently, a team of CSBP researchers were invited to visit VRA in Ghana and run a series of knowledge exchange sessions and workshops. One of these sessions was delivered to share knowledge and research expertise on effective Plastic Waste Management Practices drawing on the expertise that the research team has derived from its work on the FRESHPPACT project. In addition, the session involved preliminary discussions on a collaboration between CSBP and VRA on the development of a plastic waste management plan for the local townships in Ghana where VRA has governing responsibilities.
