Description
‘Making Soft: The Zipper Paintings of Karen Carson’ will consist of two principal areas of focus. Firstly, it will examine the significance of Carson’s Zipper paintings with regard to the extent by which they challenged what Anna Chave has contended was the “domineering and sometimes brutal rhetoric” of Minimalism. Secondly, it will consider the extent to which Carson’s paintings anticipated a number of other strategies whereby as the 1970s unfolded, artists sought to approach painting as a fundamentally textile-based practice. To support this claim, Harmony Hammond’s Floorpieces and Al Loving’s torn fabric works will be considered.
