Description
The rapid rise of Generative AI (GenAI), particularly since the introduction of ChatGPT in 2023, has posed significant challenges and opportunities for Higher Education Institutions worldwide. Project REGAIN (Regulating the Ethical use of Generative AI at Northampton) addresses the critical need to equip students with ethical guidelines and practical skills for responsible GenAI use in academic contexts. In response to concerns about the misuse of AI for assessments and potential learning gaps, this project is developing a digital tool designed to educate students on the ethical considerations of GenAI use.Though Project REGAIN is headed by Law, it is a multidisciplinary project, engaging all three Faculties of the University of Northampton, along with Library Learning & Student Services Department, the ASSIST (Additional Student Support and Inclusion Services Team) and crucially, students themselves.
By simulating ethical dilemmas and offering scenario-based learning, the REGAIN tool guides students in making informed, ethical decisions about their AI usage. This paper explores the pedagogical framework underpinning REGAIN, emphasizing its student-centred approach, which includes student contributions in design and feedback phases. Expected outcomes include an increased awareness of ethical AI use across the student body, reduced instances of unintentional academic misconduct, and a model for other institutions addressing similar challenges. Project REGAIN ultimately seeks to promote ethical AI literacy in HE, positioning students as informed digital citizens capable of navigating AI's evolving academic landscape.
