Race and Employment in the NHS: A Preliminary Study

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference PresentationResearch

Description

This preliminary study explores the complex relationship between race and employment within the National Health Service (NHS). It examines the lived experiences of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff. If focuses on recruitment, progression, workplace culture, and equality of opportunity. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative data, the study highlights persistent disparities in career advancement, representation in senior roles, and experiences of discrimination.

Preliminary findings suggest that while diversity policies exist, there remains a gap between policy and practice. Structural inequalities, unconscious bias, and limited access to leadership development opportunities continue to affect BAME staff.

The study also considers the impact of these challenges on staff well-being, retention, and patient care. By identifying the key barriers and emerging themes, this research provides a foundational understanding of racial dynamics in NHS employment and offers a basis for future in-depth investigation. It aimed at informing inclusive policy and meaningful systemic change.
