Simulation-based education: an interprofessional approach to Facilitation Team development and delivery

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference PresentationKnowledge Exchange

Description

This case study details the collaborative process of establishing an Interprofessional Faculty Team (IFT) to deliver simulation-based workshops to first-year student paramedics, midwives, podiatrists, and occupational therapists at the University of Northampton.

The Simulation Lead united a team of 13 academics from six professions to develop a workshop experience on communication and professionalism. The team worked to integrate simulation scenarios designed to enhance both learning outcomes and the overall student experience.

Over six months, the development process consisted of extensive staff training in simulation as a pedagogical approach, focusing on refining scenario design, strengthening facilitation skills, and optimising debriefing techniques to ensure deep learning and reflective practice. A comprehensive simulation-based workshop in line with UK and international best practice standards was developed and delivered to 165 students over 4 days.
