Supporting international students with their arrival at University of Northampton

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsInvited talkResearch

Description

At the JISC Student Experience Experts Group event in Birmingham, I presented a talk on the initiatives the University of Northampton is implementing to enhance the arrival experience of international students. As international students face unique challenges—ranging from adapting to new educational systems to overcoming cultural and social barriers—our focus has been on creating a supportive and inclusive environment right from their first day.

The presentation highlighted key strategies we’ve adopted, including a personalised welcome programme, tailored orientation sessions, and ongoing digital support through online platforms and student services. We discussed the importance of providing clear guidance on academic expectations, including tutorials on academic writing and critical thinking. In addition, I shared insights into how universities could incorporate digital tools, such as a virtual learning environment and chatbots, to ensure that students feel connected and informed, even before they arrive on campus.

The talk also emphasised the value of peer mentoring, with current international students helping newcomers settle in both academically and socially. By implementing these initiatives, the University of Northampton is committed to providing a smooth transition and enriching experience for international students, helping them feel part of a global academic community from day one.
