Description
Teaching maths and computing through hands-on practical activities This workshop is all about kinaesthetic learning in action. We will give you some practical ideas for teaching children to explore computer science and maths concepts with their bodies and their voices: jumping, skipping, climbing, crawling and yelling instructions. We will emphasise the idea that maths and computing are natural curriculum partners, and that an important aspect of computing is applying computational thinking skills to solve problems creatively and collaboratively.
Instead of programming a screen sprite they will learn some fundamental concepts by working with real human sprites. Reinforcing some fundamental principles away from the computer through fun hands-on kinaesthetic experiences will help the transfer to written code scenarios. We are aiming to teach some fundamental principles away from the computer through kinaesthetic by working in teams to develop sequences of commands and trying them out on ourselves through role playing robots.
The physical world is a safer place to play with lines of code, make mistakes and rearrange sequences of instructions. And by programming each other children are supporting each other through collaboration.
