The impact of STEM Education: Improving teachers’ and trainee teachers' self-efficacy in teaching STEM subjects in primary schools

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference PresentationResearch

Description

This cross-disciplinary, student-led URB@N project investigated trainee teachers’ and teachers’ self-efficacy and training needs in teaching STEM subjects within Primary Schools (KS1 & KS2). Our research involved interviews with Year 3 ITT students, to discuss how trainee teachers feel about teaching STEM, what they need to teach STEM effectively and what hopes they have for their future teaching careers. We also interviewed qualified teachers, exploring their self-efficacy in teaching STEM in school, their thoughts on STEM CPD provisions and barriers and facilitators to pupils’ STEM learning in school. This presentation will provide an overview of preliminary findings from this work, including how findings are informing future teacher CPD, training and outreach provision, while providing a greater understanding of student needs within STEM learning. Implications for practice and future research will be discussed, including the benefits of research like this which fosters inter-disciplinary collaboration and enhances the student voice.
