Three rooms: Ethics, AI and Employability in the classroom, court room and board room

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsConference PresentationResearch

Description

The premise of the poster is that the increasing prevalence of Generative and other forms of Artificial Intelligence academia needs to explore the relationships between AI in the classroom, Court room and Board Room.
In this poster, which comes out of a much larger piece of ongoing work on AI and employability, I will look at how AI is being used in the offices of larger law firms for contract negotiations and the drafting of Non-Disclosure Agreements. This brings huge benefits of time- and cost-saving, but also huge risks in terms of employment.

I will also look at the use (and potential use) of AI in the courtroom and as a (legal) advice-giver. Again, this brings huge benefits in terms of personnel costs, but also huge risks in terms of replicating and entrenching existing biases (as with the COMPAS system in the United States) and the ethical shortcomings of AI. Even though AI is not good at applying ethical standards, it can be good at describing them.
Finally, the poster will look at how we do (and should) engage with AI in the classroom. This will cover the benefits this could have in helping to teach law students about professional ethics, and the drawbacks it could have if it were to replace human interaction, rather than enhance it.
