Description
We all like to believe that tourism is a vehicle for peace, yet the reality is far more complex. The divide between the tourist and the traveller has never been so pronounced. Tourism appears mostly as a post-historical expression of Western societies, where it operates as a driver of unchecked consumerism and capitalism; where “authentic”, “sustainable” and “respectful” are charming adjectives for marketing teams and somewhat distracted and inadvertently complicit scholars. Ethical and political consequences of tourism as it is today must be discussed, in theory and practice, including the practice of using tourism in shaping historical memory (sometimes supporting propaganda) and commodifying human suffering.World Tourism Day on 27th September is a reflection on the interconnectedness of tourism and peace. The Hotel Management School Leeuwarden and the European Tourism Futures Institute brings you a series of events to reflect and celebrate the day. In this webinar as part of the symposium, we discuss the central themes of the day, 'Peace Through Remembrance, Spirituality and Hospitality'
