Description

This study explores the challenges facing African-descent students in UK higher education (HE), aiming to promote social mobility and justice. Despite efforts to widen participation, these students continue to underperform compared to their white counterparts. The research, conducted at a post-1992 English university, employs Critical Race Theory, intersectionality, Bourdieu's tools and Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Model to examine their experiences. Findings reveal systemic prejudice and various hurdles including psychological, intellectual, and financial issues. International students face additional barriers such as language difficulties and cultural isolation. Recommendations include adopting inclusive teaching methods and addressing systemic discrimination to ensure fair access and promote the achievement of underprivileged groups. The study's contribution lies in its comprehensive examination of African-descent students' holistic experiences, including socio-cultural, learning, financial challenges, and coping strategies, highlighting the resilience and development of third culture identity.
