Using visual research methods to explore the student experience - photovoice for research.

Activity: Academic Talks or PresentationsInvited talkKnowledge Exchange

Description

Working as an academic librarian I work with students from a range of backgrounds. I have used research to learn more about their experiences, so I can adapt my practice to suit their needs.

In this seminar I will discuss how I have used photovoice as a research method to explore the experience of international students coming to study in the UK. Photovoice, also known as participatory photography, is a visual research method that encourages active participation in the project (Tewell, 2019; Hicks and Lloyd, 2018; Luo, 2017; Wang, 2003). I will provide an overview of photovoice and how it was used in the context of this project. In this project, the simplicity of the photographic prompts allowed the students to communicate their experiences in more depth.

After summarising the research method used, the presentation will share the findings from my research, and I will reflect on how the project came together. The research project was funded by the AHRC-RLUK Professional Practice Fellowship Scheme for research and academic libraries.
