DescriptionDr Ali Al Sherbaz, Senior Lecturer in Computing at the University of Northampton, recently visited the University of Babylon in Iraq and was involved in a number of talks and discussions about the partnership between the two institutions.

He first visited the College of Engineering as a keynote speaker at its first international engineering conference. Speaking to 250 people in the opening session, Ali’s lecture was titled ‘Internet of Things between Engineering’s Innovation and Social Impact’ and focused on the possible idea of an ‘innovation initiative’ which will act as a portal to share ideas between Babylon and Northampton.

He also visited Babylon’s IT College and had the opportunity to meet with the students who had applied to the University of Northampton but unfortunately had had their visa applications refused. Ali was able to pass on messages from the Dean of the School of Science and Technology and explain the situation to them in more detail. There was also a discussion about the possibility of establishing a franchise course for Network and Software in the IT College, with the aim of students starting in September 2016. Ali gave a lecture about the current research projects that are being undertaken in Northampton.

There was also the opportunity for Ali to visit the Nursing College too, where he gave a talk about the future of the partnership between the University of Northampton and a lecture about utilising the mobile technology in the health sector. This was then followed by a visit to the newly refurbished building and laboratory within the College and then an afternoon soaking up the heritage in the Babylon’s ancient city.
