Alexandra Murphy is a researcher, photographic practitioner and educator and has been full-time Senior Lecturer in Photography at the University of Northampton since 2014.
She has lived in South Africa for 17 years, where she also worked as a photographer and lecturer and also studied, completing both her BFA and MFA degrees in Photographic Arts at Rhodes University, Grahamstown.
Continuing to work as a freelance photographer, Alexandra lived in Germany for a year before returning to in London in 1998, where she freelanced in editorial photography, produced work for publication and exhibition and worked as a visiting lecturer.
Alexandra completed her MA Digital Practices at Norwich University of the Arts in 2007 and is currently completing the final year of her practice-led PhD at Middlesex University.
Current research practice explores various preservative and dialectical connections between photography and the museum, primarily through representations of the natural history museum collection.
Field work is based in museums both in the US and in the UK; through the practice, the research examines a range of cultural theories from metapsychology, museology and philosophy.
Outputs are exhibited and presented at conferences and independent exhibitions.
