Biography
Daniel is the Searchlight Archivist at the University of Northampton, as well as an Associate Lecturer in History. He completed his PhD at Northampton in 2021, and his research largely covers three areas:
Research Interests
- The history of the Far Right and Antifascism in Britain and elsewhere
Daniel's research has explored the organisations of the far right and antifascism, primarily for the 1960s to 1980s, but also more contemporary and more historical groups. This has included exploration of 43 Group and 62 Group, as well as of small far right groupuscules such as the National Socialist Group. As part of this, Daniel has given interviews to various media outputs on a range of subjects, most prominently on the infiltration and use of the military by the far right in Britain. - The ethics and practice of using extreme archives/materials for research and teaching
As the only archivist of the Searchlight Archive in its decade of existence, Daniel has developed an expertise in this area and often shares best practice with both academic and industry colleagues. He has won several funding bids to help explore the use of radical collections in teaching and history engagement, and put this into practice within his own teaching. - The use of print or media cultures to construct and transmit identity within radical groups
The focus of Daniel's PhD was on the use of magazines to construct and promote identities within antifascist and far right movements, and the use of these identities to motivate those movements to action. This interest in identity and cultural transmission has continued, and recent research includes a shift to explore ecofascism and the use of environmental campaigns by the contemproary far right and those in the more recent past, including work on American as well as British groups and consideration of online material.
