Biography

Hannah has worked in the field of education for over 20 years, with a focus on relational, creative, and playful approaches in both research and practice. She began her career as a secondary school History teacher through the Teach First programme and went on to teach in a range of London schools. She later became the International Baccalaureate Coordinator at an international school in Switzerland.

In higher education, Hannah has held Lecturer roles in Education and Early Childhood Education at Middlesex University and the University of Bath, contributing to Undergraduate, MA, and EdD programmes. She holds an MA in Education (2018) and a Doctorate in Education (2024), both from the University of Bath. Her doctoral research involved co-researching and co-authoring with young children to explore play and nature relations in an urban forest school.

Hannah’s research spans early childhood through to higher education, with a core focus on education as/for ecosocial justice. Her work is grounded in critical feminist new materialist and posthumanist philosophies, and she engages with playful, creative, and post-qualitative methodologies - including walking methodologies, collaborative writing, storytelling, and arts-based methods such as collage. She is particularly interested in how postdevelopmental approaches might address educational inequities.

Hannah is currently co-editing two forthcoming books:

  • Postdevelopmental Approaches in Environmental Early Childhood Education (Routledge), with Professor Jayne Osgood and Claire Walsh
  • Researching Childhoodnature (Springer), with Elisabeth Barratt Hacking

She is actively involved in several research collectives:

  • Childhoodnature Research Group – A group of students and staff with shared interests in childhoodnature research. Hannah is co-editing a forthcoming book (Springer, fc. 2026) that shares stories from student researchers in the group.
  • Living Well Now and in 2050 – A transdisciplinary group at the University of Bath. Hannah co-created educational materials for pilot projects delivered and evaluated in Sweden and Spain.
  • Get Up and Move! Collective – Founded during the pandemic by academics and students, we collaboratively explore walking methodologies and collective biography. The group has published widely and facilitated research-creation events and workshops at international conferences including ECQI (2022–2024), BERA (2022), and Adventures in Posthumanism (2023).

In addition, Hannah has conducted research for the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and supports the academic community as a peer reviewer for journals including Children and Society, Australian Journal of Environmental Education, and Gender and Education.
