Teaching Interests

Jasmine Shadrack’s teaching modules range from level 4 to level 6 performance alongside socio-musicological and cultural theory approaches to the examination of popular music from Stravinsky to Skrillex.

Her teaching interests are classical and avant-garde composition, extreme metal (particularly death and black metal), opera and psychoanalytic approaches to analysis.


​​​​Jasmine Shadrack is a Senior Lecturer in Popular Music situated in the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology at the University of Northampton. She is PAT and admissions tutor and module leader for the performance and cultural theory/musicology modules. She is the musical director and conductor of the Popular Music department’s chamber choir, that functions as adjunct androgogical co-requisite to the performance modules, music theory modules and the level 6 music education module.

Research Interests

Jasmine Shadrack’s research areas and publications are concerned with Feminism, psychoanalysis, trauma and herstory, music and performativity. Her PhD is an autoethnographic examination of a woman's performane in black metal. As part of her working research practice she is the guitarist/front woman of a black metal band. She has also been a lead investigator on a successful funding bid through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in association with Queen Mary’s University London and the Academic Charts Online. ​She sits on the board for ACO (Academic Charts Online) and is a member of ISMMS (International Society for Metal Music Studies).

Her first monograph is in process and is being publshed in 2020 by Emerald Publishing.
