Biography

Dr Khanh Nguyen has completed extensive studies in accounting and auditing at the PhD, CPA (Certified Practising Accountant), Master’s, and Bachelor’s levels. Before transitioning to academia, he was a CPA Australia member with nine (9) years of industry experience in accounting, auditing, and finance, both locally and internationally, including senior roles, such as Finance and Human Resources Manager at the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID), and Auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC). He has also had more than nineteen (19) years of combined research and industry experience in fraud and corruption prevention and detection, particularly within the international non-governmental and non-profit sectors. In addition, he has had over eight (8) years of international undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience in accounting, auditing, and finance in both Australia and the United Kingdom (UK). He has also provided more than twelve (12) years of career mentorship to undergraduate and postgraduate accounting and finance students through the Career Mentor Scheme at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. Prior to joining the University of Northampton, UK, he held academic positions at Federation University Australia and Western Sydney University in Australia.

In terms of research, as the first and corresponding author, he has published in reputable accounting, auditing, and forensic accounting journals, including the Journal of Accounting Literature (Emerald Publishing, UK) and the Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting (NACVA, USA). All his publications have been research on accounting fraud.

Regarding awards, he received the Best Dissertation Award in Forensic Accounting from the American Accounting Association in 2020 for his PhD thesis (https://aaahq.org/Education/Awards/Annual-Meeting-Section-Awards/2020). Notably, he was the first researcher to receive this Award based on data collected outside the United States (US) and was only the second non‑U.S. researcher, reflecting the originality, quality, and contribution of his research. Following the completion of his PhD, he was selected as a Finalist for the Accounting Student of the Year Award in Australia in 2020 (https://www.accountantsdaily.com.au/australian-accounting-awards/winners/2020-winners-and-finalists). In the same year, he also received the Teaching Excellence Award from the Australian National Institute of Management and Commerce.

Currently, he is the External Examiner for all modules in BSc Accounting and Finance; and BSc Finance and Investment at Coventry University, UK.

Research Interests

Research interests: auditing; forensic accounting; fraud examination including fraud (undetected, suspected, actual/detected, and future) and factors (individual-level, organisational-level, industry-level, and country-level) influencing fraud; and INGO and non-profit organisation sectors.
