Personal profile
Biography
Mike is a lecturer in Environmental Science with expertise including biological and environmental sampling, species identification, biodiversity assessment and conservation, and water quality assessment. He has experience of working in terrestrial and freshwater environments in temperate and subtropical regions (primarily sub-Saharan Arica, and south America).
Research Interests
My interests lie broadly in the areas of applied vegetation ecology and ecohydrology, including:
- Interactions between vegetation, macroinvertebrates, and hydrology in freshwater systems, and the role of hydrology in controlling vegetation structure, composition, and ecosystem services (e.g., water quality regulation).
- Habitat assessment in tropical regions for biodiversity, species conservation, and sustainable development.
- The role of management practices (e.g., restoration, rewilding, fire, grazing) on terrestrial vegetation structure and development.
- Development of biomonitoring tools and hydrological characterization of temperate and tropical African wetland systems.
- Sustainable development in developing countries.
