Biography

  1. Nikki studied for her PhD at Warwick University. She taught at the Universirty of Paris X whilst doing research for her PhD, and her first academic post was in the School of European Studies at the University of Sussex. She subsequently held senior posts at the Universities of Bristol and Swansea, before coming to the University of Northampton in 2015.

Research Interests

  1. Nikki’s doctoral research led to her first book on Indochina, and she has subsequently published widely on the French Empire and its aftermaths. In 2008, she was one of the founding editors of the Journal of War and Culture Studies, and continued to co-edit the journal until 2018. She produced a number of special issues of the journal, and co-edited a book on Men After War for the journal’s book series. She has been an associate editor of French Cultural Studies since 2006. Nikki co-held a large ESRC grant for research into the Treaty Port of Tianjin, resulting in work on the French and Belgian concessions in late c.19 China. Her work on empire and imprisonment  has now led to a project on the beginnings of French criminal anthropology. She was made Editor in Chief of the journal French Cultural Studies in 2019.

Teaching Interests

Nikki teaches HIS1020 Liberty Equality Fraternity: French History from 1789; and HIS2009 Empires through History. She offers a special subject in HIS3031 Algerian Colonisation and the War of Independence, and an MA module HISM053 on Memories of War.
