Biography

Paul studied for his undergraduate degree at Brighton University and graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Podiatric Studies (First Class) in 1991. Paul went on to study for a Master of Science degree in Podiatry at the same University and graduated with an MSc in 1996.

Paul worked in the NHS for 11 years where he gained experience in treating a number of specialist groups. He worked on Orthopaedic, Diabetic, Psychiatric, Wound care and Rheumatology clinics. He gained additional experience in the treatment of children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Paul also worked in a management position for 5 years where he co-ordinated a small team of staff and ran a biomechanics orthotic laboratory.

Paul currently works at The University of Northampton as a Senior Lecturer in Podiatry. He has worked in the University sector since 1994. He trains undergraduate and postgraduate Podiatry students and also works at the clinical training unit at Northampton General Hospital where he specialises in the management of musculoskeletal problems of the lower limb, foot and ankle orthopaedics, biomechanics, orthotic management with an interest in foot surgery.

In 2008 Paul was awarded a Fellowship of the College of Podiatrists in Podiatric Medicine and in 2009 he became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In 2010 Paul was awarded a PhD at The University of Northampton where he investigated osteoarthritic changes in the big toe joint.

In 2012 Paul was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Degree Supervision and also became a Fellow Faculty Podiatric Medicine of Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons (Glasg).

In 2012, Paul also became a member of the NRES Research Ethics Committee (Leicester Central) and a mentor on the clinical academic career intern scheme (NHS Midlands & East).

In 2015, Paul was awarded Chartered Scientist status by the Research Council UK.

Research Interests

Paul has been involved in a number of research projects during his career with his main focus on the following subject areas:

  • 1988 – Foot problems in children with Juvenile Chronic Arthritis.
  • 1992 – The effect of occlusive peripheral arterial disease of the lower limb on vibration perception threshold.
  • 1995 – The impact of research on the understanding and management of the diabetic Charcot foot.
  • 1996 – Correlation of in-toeing gait in children and developmental stage.
  • 1996 – Changes in the tibiofemoral angle in children aged 1 to 9 years.
  • 1998 – Is generalized hypermobility a predisposing factor for development of juvenile hallux valgus?
  • 2003 – Surgical treatment of hallux limitus/ rigidus.
  • 2007 – Radiological parameters associated with osteoarthritis of first metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.
  • 2008 – Clinical parameters associated with osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.
  • 2008 – Reliability study of clinical and radiological variables of hallux rigidus.
  • 2009 – A qualitative multi-professional evaluation of hallux rigidus classification.
  • 2009 – Differences between normal and osteoarthritic articular cartilage in human knee and ankle joints.
  • 2010 – An evidence-based classification framework for hallux rigidus.
  • 2014 – An investigation of Spinal Cord Stimulation effect upon surface hyperalgesia.
  • 2015 – Spinal cord stimulation & chronic lower limb pain (case study series).
  • 2015 – Use of spinal cord stimulation in managing neuropathic foot pin: A case series report
  • 2015 – A prospective evaluation of the clinical and radiographic outcome of patients undergoing 1st MTPJ arthrodesis using the MOXFQ and SF-12

Bidding activity

  • Funding to support X-ray data collection of paediatic knees for Masters degree in Podiatry.
  • Medical Research Council (Sept 2011) and Arthritis Research UK (May 2012): A possible genetic basis to posterior tibial tendinopathy.

Proposal submitted for contract research

  • 2012 – INGSource Inc. to undertake pilot study on FS6.
