Personal profile

Biography

Sallek is a humanitarian security risk mitigation specialist and a lecturer in Criminology at the University of Northampton since 2023. I lead the research modules in Criminology and actively contribute to the development and delivery of modules in the department.

I am a grant recipient of the Next Generation Africa program of the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) and the Lisa Maskel Research Fellowships administered in the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences, Stellenbosch University. I was also a co-recipient of a research grant from Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung West Africa.

Previously, I was a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; a visiting lecturer at Plateau State University; and a lecturer at the University of Jos, Nigeria where I held various administrative roles including head of exams and records. I also have extensive experience working in hostile security environments with international non-profit and development organisations to ensure a safe and secure operations and program implementation. The latter experience contributes to my research and teaching practices.

Research Interests

My research interest centres around civil-military relations, security, peace and conflict, and violent non-state actors such as terrorists, insurgents, militias, and armed bandits. I am also interested in the intersection of crime and crime control and management with new technologies.
