This research sets out to analyse the motivations and barriers to using alternatives to ‘the dump’, such as the website Freecycle, in order that local authorities and national government can be informed of where and how more effective strategies to avoid landfill could be employed. It will involve two phases of research and focus on three different geographical areas, chosen in order to reflect large cities, small towns, and rural areas. The first research phase will be the gathering of secondary data on demographics and municipal waste. The second research phase will involve informal qualitative research (interviews) with members of Freecycle groups in the three geographical areas.
