Effects of eccentric plantarflexor and dorsiflexor training on neuromuscular characteristics associated with fall risk in older people

Project Details

Description

This project aims to determine the influence of a six-week isokinetic eccentric training programme targeting the flexor and extensor muscle groups at the ankle on muscle strength, mass, mobility and balance in older people. We hope to identify an effective exercise that is well-tolerated by older people and capable of simultaneously improving several important falls risk factors.

Layman's description

This project looked at the effects of a six-week muscle lengthening (eccentric) training programme targeting the ankle muscles. We hope to determine whether the exercise is well-tolerated by older people and capable of simultaneously improving several important falls risk factors in older people including muscle strength, mobility and balance.

Key findings

Significant increases in strength, muscle mass, and balance were detected.
