Empowering female students and graduates enhancing skills and expanding opportunities: Learning from UK and Indonesia

Project Details

Description

According to International Labour Force (2022) it is more difficult for women to find a job compared to men. The global labour force participation for women is just over 50%, whereas it is 80% for men (World Bank, 2022). Even if women find work they are more likely to work in low-quality jobs (International Labour Force, 2022). Although there has been a significant increase in the number of women participating in work, women still face barriers (such as gender bias; childcare commitments; and cultural values) in their path to employment and after they have gone into employment. Improving women’s transition from higher education to employment and increasing their employability contribute to a) the overall job market, as employers need qualified graduates; b) advancement of women’s careers; c) decreasing the gender parity between men and women in work. This project seeks to address this issue by focusing on women as entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs (female graduates working as in-house innovators). The project will partner with a University in a small town such as the Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul ‘Ulum in Jombang in East Nusa Tenggara with the aim of identify gender inclusivity gaps in entrepreneurial programmes in order to develop a diverse delivery model that is applicable to small and larger Universities in Indonesia. This project aims to address the issues by developing an entrepreneurship programme for public and private universities in Indonesia that seek to address women’s pathways into employment. The objectives are:
• Develop a research-based model for a women entrepreneurship programme in public or private universities with different scales and locations.
• Improve skills and increase access to opportunities that enhance women’s opportunities for work after completing higher and further education.
• Upskill female students with relevant skills, including for employability or entrepreneurship, community outcomes, or soft skills.
• Develop of a SIM for long-term measurement of the social, economic and environmental benefits of the women entrepreneurship programme.
