Own Merit CIC seeks to address the crisis of prison-leaver homelessness in a safe and cost-effective way, through a hybrid model of supportive living, evidence-based practice and resident-led governance. Own Merit has recently expanded its focus upstream to support care-leavers, recognising that a sizeable proportion of prisoners have previously been in care systems and therefore face multiple disadvantage. The organisation offers “supportive living” accommodation in homes where residents (six per house according to one source) live together, participate in managing the household democratically, contribute a modest fee, and receive structured support to identify skills, set goals, and move into independent life. This project examines the social impact of Own Merit CIC's programmes that seek to address the crisis of prison-leaver homelessness in a safe and cost-effective way, through a hybrid model of supportive living, evidence-based practice and resident-led governance.
