An exploratory study on the learning needs of foundation degree students

The identification of the learning needs of foundation degree students (work-based learners) is essential for creating an effective and satisfying learning experience for this category of students. In order to identify the parameters for creating a satisfying learning experience for foundation degree students, this study adopts the interview technique. This technique enabled the exploration of the experience of foundation degree students within Aston University UK, in terms of investigating their learning needs. Particularly, the semi-structured interview was chosen for this study to allow in-depth evaluation of the perceived learning needs of the students. The outcomes of the study show that there is some level of overlap in the needs of these students irrespective of their foundation degree program specialty (Engineering, or Administration and Management). Findings from this study also show that the learning needs of foundation degree students from the institution and from their employers vary. The outcomes of this study provide insights and recommendations on how the unmet learning needs of foundation degree students (obstacles to student learning/ performance) can be addressed, making reference to the students' learning needs from their employers and the institution.
