Abstract
This edited collection of chapters written by professionals from a range of disciplines and skilfully edited by Lani Florian and Margaret McLaughlin had its origins in a symposium held in 2004 at the University of Cambridge. The book, which provides a scholarly but accessible discussion of the uses and potential pitfalls of classification in education is sure to provoke debate and does indeed raise a number of issues which are worthy of increased attention.
