Abstract

The artefact 'Build Tools, Technology and Cultural Institutions for the Common Good - Text Banner' is a three part banner that was made to memorialize the event ‘The Arts in Solidarity: Navigating Funding Constraints and Shifting Paradigms of Growth and Competition’ at CASCO HQ, Utrecht on 13th April 2024.

The style of the banner references those marching banners made for political meetings and which symbolize collective struggle. The three banners each have a specific function; firstly to name and date the event, secondly to articulate and declare principles of solidarity for arts organizations, and lastly to provide a sloganizing statement as a call for action.

The banners are hand made, assembled and stitched as in the tradition of union marching banners, demonstrating a resourceful approach and commitment to symbolic objects. They are made from textiles, such as clothing and bedding provided by the third sector organisation Help the Aged, in Northampton, UK. The banners are each 150cm x 80cm in dimension.
