Exploring in/accessibility of familiar urban environments using qualitative and immersive methods

Research output: Contribution to Book/ReportChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Whilst some geography fieldwork is about exploring unfamiliar environments, there is real value in exploring familiar places but from a different perspective. Census data show that the percentage of people in England and Wales who say that their activities are limited a lot because of a disability or long-term health condition increases with age. In an undergraduate module that introduces key concepts and methods, students explore the in/accessibility of familiar urban environments for older people. After using academic resources to identify physical and social barriers to inclusion in urban spaces, they interview an older person to better understand individual lived experiences
