Abstract

The entry discusses the emergence and development of food tourism. The relationship between gastronomy, culinary arts, local food production and tourism is well documented. Food and drinks are essential elements of the tourism industry and inseparable part of both tourism demand and supply. Since the beginning of tourism, food has been at the forefront of tourist experiences and food-related products and services are now among the most popular tourism products. Food festivals, food markets, tailor made food tours and special events are examples of how food tourism has been developed. Food is not only an economic resource for destination managers but also an important tool to preserve local culture, traditions, and heritage.
