Abstract
The study investigated the influence of female appearance in secular Nigerian music videos on the lifestyle of select secondary school girls in Ibadan, Nigeria. Copies of questionnaire were administered to 405 students drawn from the select schools, using stratified and available sampling techniques. Four focus group discussions were conducted among 40 students. Findings showed that the lifestyles of majority of the students were not influenced by the appearance of females in secular Nigerian music videos. Most girls (84.3%) noted that the females are not always sleek and slim, 40.5% of the students never take fashion tips from females in secular Nigerian music videos, 70.1% never use cosmetics to look like them and 88.6% never take body treatments to look like the females. Among the few students who copied the females in these videos, there were more public than private school students. Based on the findings, it was concluded that not every student who watches secular Nigerian music videos is negatively influenced by the appearance of females in these videos. Thus, it was recommended that rather than deprive youths of enjoying secular music videos, they should be taught to explore the beneficial aspects of these videos and informed on how to avoid imitating harmful behaviours.
