This chapter introduces you to the Early childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies and the historical and contemporary context of Early Childhood Studies. By the end of the Chapter you should:

• The policy context from which the study of early childhood emerged
• The different terms used in early childhood
• Factors leading to the development of the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies
• The cycle and importance of applying knowledge to practice
