Abstract

Our understanding of the construct of childhood in the Middle Ages has changed in recent decades, but the history of medieval childhood remains a largely invisible theme even though almost half of the population of late medieval England was under the age of eighteen. Part of the problem is the shortage of surviving written records. This short paper looks at early medieval English law codes to examine how we can gain further understanding of childhood and children in medieval England.
