MPs and lords learn something about corrosion!

Research output: Contribution to JournalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The Institute of Corrosion, a member of the Parliamentary and Scientific (P&S) Committee, has been regularly performing meetings about various topics of importance in corrosion. The 4 December 2006 meeting entitled "Materials, Minerals and Mining - Innovation, Conservation and Wealth Creation" focused on materials conservation. Topics that were discussed include the global mineral extraction industry, methods for preventing corrosion and a summary of the findings of the various enquiries into the cost of corrosion. Five examples of recent innovation were also covered including adhesive bonding, localized corrosion of stainless steels, damage to the built environment, high-performance paint coatings and high-performance gas turbines. There were also talks on light emitting diodes based on more efficient gallium arsenide and a debate focussing on science education.
