Navigating Rural Smart Transitions: Strategies, Challenges, and Case Studies

This chapter explores the critical global issue of climate change, emphasizing the need for decarbonization, especially in rural set-tings. It explores the concept of 'Smart Transitions' as a way to integrate modern technology and sustainable practices in rural areas, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable development. The chapter highlights the unique energy dynamics in rural communities, highlighting their distinct energy mix influenced by geographical, socioeconomic, and infrastructural factors. In addition, two insightful case studies are presented: the Retrofitting Hard-to-Treat Housing in Intake Suburb, Doncaster, and the Zero Carbon Communities Program in South Cambridge-shire, UK.
