Abstract

Literacy is an essential skill for participation in education and the workplace and has therefore become the focus of international concern. In all languages and cultures there will be some children who find the acquisition of reading and writing difficult, an area of concern for governments around the world (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation 2008).
