Patients recognising deterioration

Abstract

Clinical deterioration includes physiological and cognitive changes that indicate worsening of a patient’s health status. This may occur over hours or days and as such is typically marked by a prolonged period of clinical instability. Without prompt response, clinical deterioration can result in referral to acute secondary care services, admission to hospital, increased length of stay, intensive care admissions, and increased morbidity and mortality.
