Abstract

In 1500, Johannes Amerbach placed his adolescent sons under the care of a master named Jerome Esmer at the University of Basel. Bruno and Basilius Amerbach complained to their father that Emser had mistreated them, and Emser wrote to Amerbach senior insisting that "I rebuked them from sincere love in the manner of a father" (145). What was "the manner of a father" in Basil at the turn of the sixteenth century? What did it mean not only to be a father, but to be fatherlike?
