Review of Disability classification in education: Issues and perspectives.

Reviews the book, Disability classification in education: Issues and perspectives by L. Florian and M. McLaughlin (2008). This edited collection of chapters written by professionals from a range of disciplines and skillfully edited by Lani Florian and Margaret McLaughlin had its origins in a symposium held in 2004 at the University of Cambridge. The book, which provides a scholarly but accessible discussion of the uses and potential pitfalls of disability classification in education is sure to provoke debate and does indeed raise a number of issues which are worthy of increased attention. The book provides a well-balanced and insightful exploration of current thinking in respect of the problems associated with a topic which has been a source of disquiet for educators over many years. The book is divided into three sections dealing with international and cross-national contexts, interaction and impacts of classification policies on educational systems, and new approaches to the classification dilemma. This book makes an important contribution not only in building upon the discussion provoked by Hobbs 33 years ago, but also through bringing together a range of perspectives.
