Abstract

This chapter outlines different types of play and how they can be used effectively in literacy teaching, particularly that of role-play areas. Examination into children's language development and literacy skills in EYFS and Key Stages 1 and 2. Exploring the role of the teacher when setting up and monitoring role-play areas through extending their use from their excellent provision in Early Years practice into later age phases. Throughout the chapter, case studies are used to illustrate their use and impact on children's literacy learning.
