Abstract
Slogans play a central role in Partisan Social Club’s practice. For example, in a 2019 essay titled “Democracy Is Dead! Long Live Democracy!,” the artists elaborate on the slogan’s galvanizing linguistic potential to both provoke action and unite a group in a common cause.
This film features a set of slogans, such as “dismantle neoliberalism” and “all property will be common.” They allude to William Thompson’s text Practical Directions for the Speedy and Economical Establishment of Communities (1830). The film was shot across Cork County and City City, in locations that were significant to William Thompson. Examples include Carhoogariff, near a property he inherited from his father in 1814; Glandore, where his family traded in the naval industry; and St. Patrick’s Street, where he lived in his family home starting in 1787. The film illustrates Partisan Social Club’s “cut and edit” method, which involves relocating various elements—in this case, slogans and sites—outside of their usual context to provoke unexpected outcomes.
The billboard behind the monitor shows an abandoned, dilapidated farm shed in Carhoogarriff, the location of Thompson's experiment in communual living. Its current state refers to agro-business, specifically the management of land and labor that has fallen into ecological ruin.
